As Google celebrates 101 years of the electric traffic signal with an illustration by Nate Swinehart (animated black and white Model T Ford cars spell "G-O-O-G-L-E" at a traffic signal) of the world’s first electric traffic light installed at Cleveland, Ohio, on August 5 1914, let’s take a look at the origins and timeline of the traffic signal as we know it today. - 1868 – First Non-electric, gas-operated Traffic Lights invented by railway engineer JP Knight were installed outside the Houses of Parliament in London. These were manually operated by the policemen to control traffic on Bridge Street, Great George Street and Parliament Street. The experiment ended in 1869 when an explosion, caused due to a gas leak, killed the officer operating the lights.
- 1912 – Lester Wire, earlier a detective in Salt Lake City, Utah came up with the idea for the first red and green electronic traffic lights by attaching wires to overhead trolley and light cables and hanging wooden boxes with red and green lights from it.
- 1914 – The American Traffic Signal Company four pairs of red and green lights (stop –go) each mounted on a post on the corner of East 105th Street and Euclid Avenue in Cleveland, Ohio. The lights were controlled via a manual switch
- 1918 – Bells were added to alert people when the lights changed and then, in New York, came the three – red, amber, green – lights we know today
- 1922 – Garrett Morgan from Ohio applied for a patent for a human-operated, crank-based traffic control device to minimize road accidents. The T-shaped invention did not materialize at the time because of the city’s reluctance to invest in man-power which would be costlier compared to an electric system.
- 1990 – Countdown timers came into being for the pedestrians.
- 1998 – 8 meter tall Traffic Light Tree by French sculptor Pierre Vivant in London with 75 sets of lights; it is now a tourist spot
Today most countries around the world rely on a sophisticated system of traffic lights that still follow the basic design. So here’s to many years of pedestrian and motorist safety, thanks to the Traffic Signal. The Gamescon 2015 saw a couple of major announcements but the one that spiked the audience’s attention was the trailer for FIFA 16 with a brand new FIFA Ultimate Team Draft and Career Mode. FIFA Ultimate Team Draft The trailer gives us a step by step demonstration of how to put together the Ultimate team of 11 players and 11 substitutes and a captain for the upcoming FIFA game. The Draft mode encourages team building by offering the option to choose the best players. Once the squad is ready, you can compete with friends or opponents in a series of up to four matches. Each win will earn you big rewards, including cash for the transfer budget. The FUT Draft comes with an entry fee of 15,000 coins, 300 FIFA Points, or 1 Draft Token. There are five group formations, and the player will have to choose one formation along with a captain from a pool of five best players and the players for each position to create a full team. An official post from EA describes the new mode with the following words, “Start your FUT Draft by choosing between five different formations. Choose wisely: the formation you pick will remain as your default formation throughout the series of matches. Will you pick a formation you're more familiar with or experiment with a formation you've never tried before? Any FUT player may show up in the draft, including Legends (only on Xbox) and the current week's special in-forms. With that kind of variety, the FUT Draft is a great opportunity for all gamers to try some of the best players in the game.” FIFA Ultimate Team Career Mode In the Career Mode, you get to train the team and improve their skills as well as enhance your management. Here the player can participate in mini-games to improve on the base statistics or skills of a player. Basically you get to build a strong team from old and new players. You can even take your team on friendly pre-season matches to Asia, South America, North America or Europe. The new FIFA 16 also includes iconic stadiums, more attack options and 900 new crowd chants. Other new features include new overlays, 12 women's international teams, new commentary and better celebrations for goals. According to Adam Shaikh, Creative Director on FIFA Ultimate Team, "We had so much fun playing it, even as the game developers and I think that's always a good start point. We were always really aware that this was something that was really fun and exciting and deep, and that was one of the things that really drove our early decision making. We needed this to be something people could play the whole time, over the whole year, so that's what we really focussed on." The new FIFA 16 is expected for Xbox One, Xbox 360, PlayStation 4, and PlayStation 3 consoles on September 22, 2015. Ryan Reynolds has gone from cute and deadly to downright lethal and hilarious at the same time as he returns as Deadpool (X-Men Origins: Wolverine 2009), this time in a spin-off movie. The movie preview received a standing ovation at 2015 Comic-Con in July and now the trailer for Deadpool, with its tagline, "With great power comes great irresponsibility," is capturing hearts everywhere as Reynolds dons the mantle of Wade Wilson, a.k.a. the supersoldier called Deadpool. The movie centres around Wade who goes under the knife to trade liver, lungs, prostate and brain cancer for superpowers with these words, "Just make sure you do right by me, so I can do right by somebody else. And just don't make my suit green — or animated!" At the Comic Con, Reynolds had expressed his surprise that the movie was able to see the light of day, "For one, I think it's an absolute miracle that a studio let us make Deadpool, let alone a rated-R Deadpool." True to the Marvel comics universe, Deadpool is a fountain of wisecracks which takes nothing away from him skill and prowess as a deadly superhero. You won't know whether to be in splits or hold your breath when Deadpool kicks serious butt with the words, "Daddy needs to express some rage." His puns are as good as his kicks! A first time directorial venture by Tim Miller, the movie, which is scheduled to hit the silver screens on February 12, 2016, also stars Morena Baccarin, Ed Skrein, T.J. Miller, Gina Carano, Brianna Hildebrand and Leslie Uggams. It has been confirmed that Cleveland Cavaliers forward LeBron James will be attending USA Basketball's mini-camp in Las Vegas next week but only for a day. Team USA’s minicamp is a preparatory training camp for the 2016 Summer Olympics in Rio de Janiero and attendance is usually mandatory on all three days (August 11 to August 13, 2015) if the players wish to participate in the 2016 Olympics. James however, is being allowed an exception as the camp coincides with the ‘LeBron James Family Foundation annual family reunion event’ on August 13 which was scheduled way before the camp dates were finalized. Currently rumours are swirling around whether James will participate in the 2016 Summer Olympics in Rio as the part of Team USA. Though there is still a long way to go till the final decision (he might wait till the end of the 2015-16 season), James has been a part of the USA Basketball team from the age of 19 and has won two Olympic gold medals in the 2008 Beijing Olympics and 2012 London Olympics. Apart from these he has also participated in the 2004 Summer Olympics and the 2006 FIBA World Cup. The camp is expected to host around 30 NBA and rounds of meetings, shootarounds, and a non-contact game (August 13); the events will be presided over by Jerry Colangelo, the executive director of the USA Team who issued a statement saying “It's just a loose thing I’m doing because we don’t have anything to prepare for this summer. The purpose of having this minicamp is to celebrate the last 10 years of Team USA basketball and begin to find out who’s committed for next summer.” Apart from James, the other players expected to attend the camp are: - Dwight Howard (Houston Rockets center)
- James Harden (Houston Rockets guard)
- Blake Griffin (Los Angeles Clippers forward)
- Kevin Durant (Oklahoma City Thunder forward)
- Kevin Love (Cleveland Cavaliers forward)
- Kyrie Irving (Cleveland Cavaliers)
