| Despite finding that his crimes were "especially heinous," jurors declined to impose the death penalty on James Holmes, 27, for the July 2012 shooting rampage that killed 12 and wounded 70 at an Aurora, Colo., movie theater. Defense attorneys said Holmes would have pleaded guilty to the murders if prosecutors had taken the death penalty off the table from the start.
