Windows 10 is Free but Windows DVD Player costs $15

Windows 10 might be free for its existing customers, but the Microsoft Windows official DVD player app certainly isn't, in fact, it costs $15 or £11.59.

So here’s the deal, Windows 10 does not play DVDs like its predecessors; you have to pay for the official app, which incidentally used to be free with all previous OS. The price has to be paid when downloading the official DVD player from the Windows app store since Windows 10 no longer offers the old native program – the Windows Media Player. RIP WMP (DVD playback removed in Windows 8, but videos could still be watched on a free WMP).

However, there is one good news, if you had upgraded to Windows Media Center on Windows 8, then the new Microsoft DVD player is free for you. But there are always a number of excellent (and free!) alternatives available out there, think VLC, so maybe you could do without the paid Windows one. Here’s what one disgruntled user had to say about the new DVD player:

So you may have saved a bunch on a life-changing software update (for the first year at least and for existing Microsoft users), but you will ultimately shell out the bucks for several apps and programs which we have always received free of cost. Remember Solitaire, the free game we spent hours over? That too will show ads unless you pay a subscription fee! So get ready to pay for an ad-free game of your first gaming love. On the upside, a lot more features seem to have been added.

Sony Sets Release Dates for Bad Boys, Jumanji, Ghostbusters Sequels

Sony Pictures chairman Tom Rothman has just released a statement announcing a slew of sequels and movies slated for 2016 to 2019 releases including Bad Boys III and IV, Jumanji, all-female Ghostbusters and a couple of other big ticket items.

While Bad Boys fans will be thrilled to see their favourite Will Smith and Martin Lawrence paired up again, Jumanji might not be the same since the demise of the late Robin Williams means that the movie has lost its leading light. Paul Feig’s female-centered Ghostbusters however might give you may reasons to laugh and shiver as you watch the girl-gang round up the crazy spooks.

Here is a quick look at the list of movies set for release from 2016 to 2019:

Businesses can Avoid PR Disasters with Facebook’s New Private Pages Messaging

If you are a business owner, now you can make use of Facebook’s new private messaging service to send promotional one-to-one messages, provide active customer support, connect with individual customers and privately resolve angry customer issues without engaging publicly with them.

The newest feature by Facebook allows users to connect with businesses and vice-versa through a messaging service on the Facebook business page. Now anyone can interact privately and confidentially with a business; the conversation is not up for debate on the public platform.

Page admins will also be able to archive, delete, flag and mark messages as read, unread and spam in bulk. Alternatively users can also block such private messages sent by business owners.

As a user, now it will be easier to connect with a particular enterprise that pops up with an alluring product or service on their News Feed ads with a simple ‘Send Message’ button. Or it could be an ideal way to request customer support or even vent grievances without turning it into a disastrous public debate.  When the business sends a private reply to a customer’s public comment it shows up as a note letting other visitors on the Page know that the request has been confidentially handled. Responsive pages even receive a ‘Very responsive to messages’ badge to display on their profile.

In a blog release Facebook said, “There’s a reason many people prefer to communicate with friends and family through private messaging: it’s fast and convenient. And increasingly people want to communicate with businesses in the same efficient way. In the coming weeks, Page admins will be able to reply to public comments with a private message, helping them solve private customer requests more efficiently.”

Richard Jefferson Officially Signs on with Cleveland Cavaliers

Wingman, veteran player and free agent Richard Jefferson has finally been reeled in by the Cleveland Cavaliers who signed him on for a minimum of one year.

In his 14 years of NBA career, Jefferson has played for seven teams -Dallas, Milwaukee, San Antonio, Golden State, Utah and New Jersey (now Brooklyn) in over 1,008 games. His most recent stint was with the Dallas Mavericks where he made an average of 16.8 minutes, 5.8 points, and 2.5 rebounds per game in 74 games in the 2014-15 season. Jefferson’s career average is 13.9 points and 4.3 rebounds with 38 percent long distance shots.

His speciality lies in shooting, especially 3-pointers.  Jefferson’s career includes two NBA Finals teams (2002 and 2003 with the Nets) and in 105 playoff games. He will likely back up LeBron James in the Cavaliers 2015-16 season team.

Though the deal was in the works earlier, it was only made official recently and announced via a press release yesterday because Jefferson was initially supposed to remain with the Mavericks but decided on a last minute change to pursue another NBA finals dream.
