The World’s Fastest New Chip from Intel and Micron

There is something a thousand times faster than the already speedy “flash” memory and it is the new memory chip designed jointly by Intel and Micron.

The spinning disk drive is already outdated and if the new invention by Intel-Micron is anything to go by, flash/solid state drives, based on NAND technology, will follow the same path. The new memory chip is built on a 3-D design that allows computers to store and extract individual packets of data at 1000 times the speed of a flash drive. Because of its density, it can also hold the same amount of data in a smaller shape and space.

According to its creators, 3D XPoint (pronoun nced ‘cross point’) has 10 times the storage capacity of DRAM (dynamic random access memory) giving it an edge over all existing memory chips in the market today. Unlike DRAM, it does not require a constant power flow which means it can not only analyze and process massive volumes of data but also improve the performance of its host device. According to Intel, each XPoint die can store 128GB of data, the chip comprises a pair of dies (sheets of semiconductor in the chip)

Explaining the breakthrough, Micron’s president Mark Adams said, “One of the most significant hurdles in modern computing is the time it takes the processor to reach data on long-term storage. This new class of non-volatile memory is a revolutionary technology that allows for quick access to enormous data sets and enables entirely new applications.”

If the new chip is put into production, it will mean the additional development of a new kind of motherboard technology as none of the current ones have a bus speed to match. The temporary solution will be to connect them to the PCI Express ports on a computer. Currently, production plans are scheduled for next year at Micron’s Utah plant.

Ben Stiller is Back with The Zoolander 2

Nearly a decade after the first Zoolander (2001), Ben Stiller and Owen Wilson – the ‘Blue Steel’ – are back with Zoolander 2. The duo announced the news of the sequel in style while crashing the Paris Fashion Week in May in Valentino creations!

Eager fans can watch the first official trailer of the film online showing Zoolander himself. The guy hasn't changed one bit! The trailer highlights a discussion between the Zoolander and the narrator about The Big Bang Theory and evolution where Zoolander asks, "If God exists, then why did he make ugly people?" The voice which sounds like the famous Stephen Hawking is actually the same voice used in his DECtalk machine and it is named Dennis.

The movie is said to revolve around Zoolander’s difficulty in adjusting to a selfie-obsessed world that sees him as ancient.  The Facebook page of the sequel describes it as ‘3% body fat and 1% brain activity!’ – an appropriate description for a fun movie that gives us a glimpse into the brain of the cute but dumb Derek Zoolander.

A Paramount Pictures release, directed by Ben Stiller who is also the lead character in the movie, the cast includes, Owen Wilson, Will Ferrell, Christine Taylor, Olivia Munn, Kristen Wiig and cameo appearances by Hollywood and fashion world celebs including Justin Bieber, Kim Kardashian and Willie Nelson.

The movie is scheduled to hit the silver screens across the nation by February 2016.

AT&T’s First TV-Phone Plan after DirecTV Acquisition

Barely weeks after receiving the FCC’s (Federal Communications Commission) approval of its $48.5 billion acquisition of DirecTV, AT &T has already launched its first plan from the deal – a TV-Phone wireless combo deal that will make your day!

Announcing the new plan, Brad Bentley, chief marketing officer of AT&T Entertainment and Internet Services said, “Today is the first of many planned moves to enable our customers to enjoy a premium entertainment experience almost anywhere. We’re going to deliver more TV and entertainment choices to more screens — when and where our customers want it.”

Under the new deal, AT&T has made it clear that users will be able to access TV from any device be it a TV, a PC, a smartphone or a tablet( with the companion app) as soon as they sign up for the service. The new promo plan costing $200 (for the first year) offers basic TV, both HD and DVR, for four receivers via DirecTV or U-verse and four phone lines with 10GB shared wireless data and unlimited talk time and sms.  The catch is, this plan requires the user to sign a one/two year contract between August 10th and November 14th, 2015. But considering the fact that it will save you a nice chunk of money in the initial one/two years, it is a steal at this price.

AT&T New Plan

For those of you who are not interested in a combo plan, you can opt for AT&T’s new All in One plans that cost between $50 to $125 for TV service via DirecTV or U-verse (your choice); and if you want a separate family phone plan, simple add $160. If you combine the TV and wireless services, you could get a $10 discount. The company is also offering a range of internet services between $30 to $50 per month for the initial year.

AT&T has also started selling DirecTV service in a vast majority of its retail stores alongside its U-Verse TV service. Additionally an AT&T smartphone could get you a $300 bill credit!

Tom Danielson Tests Positive for Testosterone in Dope Test

American cyclist Tom Danielson, who ranked eighth in the 2011 Tour de France and second in 2014’s Tour of Colorado, is in trouble with dope tests again as he has tested positive for synthetic testosterone.

In October 2012, Danielson, a former teammate of Lance Armstrong (he also testified on the investigation at the time), had been suspended for six months by the USADA (U.S. Anti-Doping Agency) on doping charges but this time, he took to the social media to declare his innocence. Danielson now rides for the Cannondale Garmin team and was scheduled to participate in the Tour of Utah, starting Monday. Now however, he will have to skip the race, which he has won for the last two years (2013 and 2014), till the results arrive from the next sample, Sample B (the first sample that came back positive was taken on July 9).

His sponsors Cannondale-Garmin, the team, the USADA or the UCI (governing body of cycing) have yet to make any statement related to the dope test. The announcement came via Danielson’s Twitter account where he announced the results and protested his innocence. Expressing his frustration and resentment at the unexpected news, Danielson said, “Tonight has been one of the worst nights of my life. While I was eating dinner with my team the night before Tour of Utah I received a call from USADA notifying me that an out of competition test I gave July 9th has tested positive for, from what I understand, synthetic testosterone. I have not taken this or any other banned substance.”

He goes on to add, “I feel incredibly hurt, frustrated, and angry by this. I don’t understand how or why this happened and still can’t even accept this is true I would never ever take anything like this especially after everything I have gone through the last years. This makes absolutely no sense.”

Given his previous admission to doping in 2012, if the second sample returns positive, Danielson could be looking at an early retirement from his professional career.
