The Facebook ‘Riff’ App lets You Make Collaborative Videos with Friends

After Scrapbook, Facebook announced yet another new app yesterday, Riff, a collaborative video creating tool which allows different Facebook friends to contribute clips to create a single video which can then be shared on Facebook or anywhere else online, including other social media sites.

Viral videos are all a rage these days and what better way to create a viral video than by creating it with friends. A product of Facebook's experimental Creative Labs, Riff is designed to help people around the world collaborate on creative, mashup video projects. The app has been released as a test product to see how people take to it and use it to learn the art of creating viral videos.

To get started, a person who wants to start a video project has to sign into the app with a Facebook account, choose a topic and start filming (Riff automatically starts a 3-2-1 countdown); he/she can record a short clip which can then be previewed and shared. That person can then pass it on to friends or collaborators who will get an app notification can add their own clips to the video using Riff. Only designated friends/collaborators can add to the video and once the video is sent around more and more collaborators and content can be added, increasing its chances of going viral. Only friends of the video creator featuring on the clips are automatically tagged.

Riff allows people to create a chain of videos using clips which are 20 seconds or shorter; the clip can be given a crazy name. Each collaborator can add several clips since there is no limitation to the number of clips that can be added. What’s even better is that the best user-created videos will be displayed on Riff’s home page.

When the clip is shared on Facebook, the entire chain is shared along with it but users cannot like/comment on the video from within the app. In case the original video maker does not like any of the added clips, he/she can delete the unwanted clips via a 'three dot' button. Any clip or Riff video deemed offensive can be reported to Facebook and if it violates Facebook’s posting policies, it can be removed.

CaptureHere is a quick overview of some things to keep in mind while using Riff:

  • Riff only allows users to shoot videos, previously shot footage cannot be uploaded
  • Users get a short window before filming starts and after the final product, they can approve it
  • Riff does not offer any multi-shot recording or editing
  • Users cannot like/comment directly in Riff
  • There is an option to skim through the clips with fast-forward
  • Only the video maker’s friends or designated collaborators can contribute clips
  • All creative contributors to the clip will be automatically tagged
  • The video creator can delete unwanted clips with a ‘3-dot button’
  • Any clip or video can be reported as offensive and will be investigated according to Facebook’s policies

Explaining the motive behind Facebook’s latest offering, Product manager Josh Miller commented in blogpost, "Our hunch was that if you could make videos collaboratively, the creative process would be more fun and the final product would be cooler." He goes on to add, "The potential pool of creative collaborators can grow exponentially from there, so a short video can become an inventive project between circles of friends you can share to Facebook or anywhere on the Internet."

Facebook Riff is being offered in 15 languages, including English, Spanish, Portuguese, French, Italian, Thai, Vietnamese, Japanese and Polish and is available for download from the Google Play Store and iOS App Store. Since it is still in testing phase, only user reception will determine its future as a full-fledged app or a discontinued one.

You Can Now Trade in Your Android Smartphone For Brand New iPhone at Apple Stores

RecycleProgramIn a bid to supercharge its iPhone sales, Apple now allows you to trade-in your non-Apple smartphone for a brand new iPhone. The program dubbed as Reuse and Recycle allows users to trade-in their Sony, Samsung, LG, Nokia, HTC and BlackBerry phones for a credit which can be used to purchase a new iPhone.

Apple's new trade in program offers the flexibility to trade in Android for iPhone. The credit value, certainly depends on the age and condition of your used device, and can fetch you an iPhone 5C, iPhone 6 or iPhone 6 Plus.

“Get credit when you recycle your eligible iPhone, iPad, or select smartphone from another manufacturer.”

It is a strategic move coinciding with the launch of Samsung's flagship Galaxy S6 and S6 Edge smartphones. Certainly, Apple which recently surpassed Samsung in global sales, is attempting to entice potential buyers of these new flagship phones too, and offer them an iPhone opportunity furtively intercepting a Samsung upgrade. Other brands are also likely to be affected hard if customers find the trade-in credit tempting.

Apple Trade in Program - UKApple has generously offered credits of up to $175 for iPhone trade in when the program originally launched in 2013. The trade-in credit for non-Apple devices is a first move by Apple in all these years, and is a subject of speculation.

The move could be shot in the arm for these rival companies with Apple advancing to accept heterogeneous brands in its recycling program. The Cupertino company has previously allowed only used iPhones to be recycled and encouraged trade-in of only iPhones (later also adding iPad) in the trade-in programs.

Venturing into broader territories, Apple computer trade in program is also accepting non-Apple computers.

While there's no official announcement, Apple's UK site now lists BrightStar as its vendor for this program, but its peer in the United States remains to be updated as of this writing.

It is pertinent to mention that third parties like Amazon have already been accepting all devices including Apple and non-Apple and offering cash in exchange
