Government security forces abandoned their posts and were seen retreating from the Iraqi city of Kirkuk on Wednesday as radical Islamist militants linked to Al-Qaeda pushed deeper into Iraq's Sunni heartland. Also an estimated half a million residents have fled Iraq's second largest city, Mosul, after fighters from the Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant (ISIL) took control a day earlier.
