The Pope’s Canonization Of Junipero Serra Is A Great Teaching/Learning Opportunity – Here’s What I’m Doing

As many people know, the Pope is going to make Fr. Junipero Serra a Saint this week.

Whether Fr. Serra deserves to be one is a big question that provides an excellent teaching and learning opportunity – particularly here in California. And it’s great timing since we happen to be studying the California Missions this week, too.

I have collected a bunch of accessible resources related to Serra and the Missions at my U.S. History Class Blog for English Language Learners, including a modified version of an excellent article appearing the San Francisco Chronicle this morning.

I’ll be giving students the following writing prompt:

Fr. Junipero Serra Writing Prompt

The Pope is making Fr. Junipero Serra a Saint this week. Please learn about Serra’s life and the work of the California Missions by looking at the materials and videos on our class blog. Then, list the reasons some people support him being named a saint. Next, write about the reasons why some say he should not be made a saint. Then, say which side you agree with and why.

This is a version of:

They Say

I Say

Why I Say It

Let me know if you have suggestions on how I can make this a better project for my ELL students, including suggestions for additional accessible resources I should add to our class blog.

Instead Of High School Exit Exams For Civics, Study Suggests SEL Programs Would Be Better Way To Go

There’s recently been a big (and, in my opinion, misguided effort) push to make students pass a civics exam in order to graduate from high school (see Yes, Schools Should Develop Active Citizens &, No, We Don't Need Another Test To Do It).

A new study follows students who participated in a Social Emotional Learning program (called Fast Track) in school through their adulthood.

Here’s what Jonah Lehrer writes about it:

Holbein wanted to expand on this analysis by looking at voter behavior when the Fast Track subjects were in their mid to late twenties. After matching people to their voter files, he found a clear difference in political participation rates. According to Holbein's data, "individuals exposed to Fast Track turned out to vote in at least one of the federal elections held during 2004-2012 at a rate 11.1 percentage points higher than the control group." That represents a 40 percent increase over baseline levels.

Just another benefit to teaching Social Emotional Learning….

Ed Tech Digest

In another somewhat futile attempt to reduce the backlog of resources I want to share, I’m starting this weekly “Ed Tech Digest” post where I’ll share three or four links I think are particularly useful and related to…ed tech:

Chromebooks Command Close to Half of K-12 Computing Market, Analyst Says is from Ed Week. I’m adding it to The Best Resources For Using Chromebooks In The Classroom – Help Me Find More.

"Lack of Computers in Schools May Be a Blessing"–OECD Report (Part 1) is by Larry Cuban. It’s his take on the recent OECD report on tech in schools (you can read my analysis at New OECD Report Is Not An Indictment Of Ed Tech – It's Really An Indictment Of Unilateralism & Professional Development).  I’m adding it to The Best Research Available On The Use Of Technology In Schools.

I’m adding this tweet to The Best Resources For Learning How To Use Google Docs/Google Drive:

Video: “Austin’s Butterfly” & Revision

I shared this video from Ron Berger at Expeditionary Learning over at my Education Week Teacher blog a couple of years ago, but never posted it here.

I’m adding it to The Best Resources On Getting Student Writers To "Buy-Into" Revision – Help Me Find More.

Two Useful Videos About Bloom’s Taxonomy

Here are two new additions to The Best Resources For Helping Teachers Use Bloom's Taxonomy In The Classroom:

I have already two short videos that use Finding Nemo to teach Bloom’s Taxonomy. However, they both just have still images, and both use the original taxonomy. Here’s a version using actual clips from the film and that uses Revised Bloom’s (unfortunately, the creator disable the embed function).

Here’s a decent introduction to Bloom’s:
