The sweeping reorganizations in Google were made starkly apparent with the appointment of Sundar Pichai as the new CEO of Google and the creation of a separate holding parent company called Alphabet Inc. Pichai with an MA from Stanford University and an MBA from the University of Pennsylvania’s Wharton School joined Google in 2004 and has steadily risen in the ranks to become the new CEO in a restructured organization. To better explain the whole operating structure, Alphabet Inc. is the parent umbrella org of search engine and advertising run by Google's current leaders – Chief Executive Larry Page,co-founder Sergey Brin as President and Chief Financial Officer Ruth Porat. Under this will be the new Google subsidiary headed by Sundar Pichai which will include Google’s other businesses including YouTube, Android and Chrome OS as well as other units. Each Alphabet subsidiary is expected to have its own CEO all reporting to Larry Page and each unit under Alphabet will probably be set up as a spin-off public company. Just ahead of the announcement for Alphabet, Google’s market value was estimated at a whopping $444 billion. When asked about the choice of name (Alphabet) Larry Page said, “We liked the name Alphabet because it means a collection of letters that represent language, one of humanity’s most important innovations, and is the core of how we index with Google search. We also like that it means alpha-bet (Alpha is investment return above benchmark), which we strive for!” So, in effect, it is a complete reorganization, one which was announced in a blog post by Page who wrote, “We did a lot of things that seemed crazy at the time. Many of those crazy things now have over a billion users, like Google Maps, YouTube, Chrome, and Android. And we haven't stopped there. We are still trying to do things other people think are crazy but we are super excited about.” He continued saying, “In general, our model is to have a strong CEO who runs each business, with Sergey and me in service to them as needed. We will rigorously handle capital allocation and work to make sure each business is executing well.” Things seem to be going really badly for the Red Sox team. This time, it is Red Sox closer Koji Uehara who is out for the entire season with a broken wrist. While confirming Uehara ‘s inability to participate this season, the Red Sox sent out a statement saying “On Sunday, Sox manager John Farrell indicated that newly acquired Jean Machi would work as the closer in Uehara’s absence … Junichi Tazawa is another possibility but the Red Sox seem inclined to continue using him as a set-up man.” During a Friday night game in Detroit, Uehara was struck by a line drive from Ian Kinsler; though the initial x-ray did not show a fracture, a recent CT scan by the team’s medical staff proved a non-displaced distal radius fracture on his right wrist. Uehara is currently signed on with the Red Sox for $9 million till next year, but with the current injury and inability to play further games, his season total stands at 2.23 ERA and 25 saves in 27 chances. Apart from Uehara, Sox’s left-fielder Hanley Ramirez is suffering from a sore, swollen left foot from foul balls while batsman Pablo Sandoval’s style is cramped with a jammed left thumb. Second baseman Dustin Pedroia is still out of commission and is sitting pretty on the disabled list with a strained hamstring (right). So mostly the team is banking on Brock Holt who plays in almost all the positions on the field. Apart from this, the team also received infielder Josh Rutledge in a trade with Los Angeles Angels and bought over infielder Carlos Rivero from the Seattle Mariners. Remember the 90s when Baywatch (and then Baywatch Hawaii), a TV series about California lifeguards, hit the screens? The oh-so-hot show with an even hotter Pamela Anderson and David Hasselhoff was a smashing success as one of the most watched shows in the world! Well, the guys at Hollywood are bringing it back, this time as a movie! The cast includes some real eye candy with Dwayne The Rock Johnson and Zac Efron from ‘High School Musical’ in the lead roles. It was Johnson who sent out the first tweet saying, “Welcoming my dude @ZacEfron to #BAYWATCH. Our movie will be big, fun and RATED R.. Like me when I drink.” The female lead is yet to be decided but whoever is picked will have to worlk really hard to beat Pam’s sultry charms. The film itself is supposed to be based on the original series starring David Hasselhoff and Pamela Anderson but it is not known whether these two will make an appearance. The movie is about a serious lifeguard (Dwayne Johnson) who has to team up with a younger hot-head (Efron) to save their beach from an oil tycoon hell-bent on its environmental destruction. With Seth Gordon as the director, Damian Shannon and Mark Swift as writers and Beau Flynnand Ivan Reitman as producers, the movie is all set to start production sometime in early 2016. It was at the Apple WWDC 2015 that the audience was finally treated to the brand new iOS from Apple that had had people gossiping for months. When the wraps were finally taken off the new OS the crowds went wild. The iOS 9 not only includes battery life improvements, performance enhancements and security but adds Intelligence to Siri and brings a number of enhancements to some of the apps as well as a new app called News. iOS 9 requires only 1.3GB (compared to 4.6GB in iOS 8) space for installation and extends the battery life for an additional hour. The new security passcode will be a 6-digit code, 2-step authentication instead of the usual 4-digit code. Craig made it clear that iOS9 beta would be released in phases till the final production release and now with the final release in September drawing near, it is time to take a look at all this new iOS has to offer.
