Former NFL running back goes Army Ranger school staff (8 photos and story)

EGLIN AIR FORCE BASE, Fla. — When Glen Coffee left the University of Alabama a year early to play in the National Football League, it surprised many fans. He was coming off a strong junior season in which he rushed for 1,501 yards, but could have returned and worked toward a better draft position the following season. Behind the scenes, the decision included far more turmoil than that. The running back had stopped enjoying football years before, even quitting a team in middle school before his mother intervened, he said. He found success at Alabama after a standout high school career, but still didn't like the game and left the university because he thought an NFL paycheck might make playing more palatable, he said.

Powerful user submit: remembering 2 fallen friends (12 Photos/Story)

Posted: 11 Aug 2015 09:18 PM PDT

This user submit is from the members of the Military Chive Nation FB group, the post goes to fallen friends David M Sonka (Marine) and SSG Eric Christian. "So, here's the crazy story about how Dave and Eric have connected a group of Chivers…
Back in March of 2014, I met a Chiver named Chevis, who is a former Marine K-9 handler, at the Tulsa meet-up. Chevis and I spent a lot of time talking that night and I got to hear about his best friend Sonka and Sonka's MWD, Flex, who were KIA in an insider attack on May 4th, 2013.
Fast forward to May 4th, 2014. Chevis and I are texting about Dave's first anaversery and I finally Google Dave to find out more about him. It was then that we realized that, though I never knew Dave, I was at Fort Logan National Cemetery in Denver the day he was buried. I immediately hopped in my car and drop up to Denver from Fort Carson and made it to Fort Logan National Cemetery in time to have a beer with Dave.
Fast forward to March 2015. A soldier/Chivette in the Military Chive Nation Facebook group asked for help packing up a house for a friend of hers. So off I went to Ft. Riley. While packing things up, I came across a memorial in the garage for several Marines who had been KIA. One of them was KIA on May 4th, 2013. "What a coincidence," I thought. During a break, I Google Eric and find out he was killed in the same inside attack that killed Sonka and Flex....and was my friend's stepbrother.
Fast forward to May 2015 when a group of Chivers in Iraq received a morale boost that was donated in Eric's name (they're the ones in the Apache pics). The crazy part?  It arrived on May 4th…his 2nd anaversery.
Though I never knew them, by all accounts, Dave and Eric were incredible men and even more incredible Marines and K-9 handlers.  They excelled at what they did and kicked ass during their time with MARSOC. RIP, boys. You are loved and missed beyond belief. And to the Peacemakers of A Co 1-501st, keep kicking butt and come home safe."

Jettisoned F-4 fuel tanks from ‘Nam get a second life (31 Photos)

Posted: 11 Aug 2015 09:08 PM PDT

External tanks are extremely important for military aircraft as they provide fuel to integrate internal tanks and extend fighters and bombers endurance. Indeed, even if they can be refueled by aerial tankers, tactical jet planes heavily rely on the JP-8 fuel loaded on the external fuel tanks. However, the auxiliary fuel tanks represent an additional weight, additional drag, and they will reduce the aircraft maneuverability. In real combat, external fuel tanks are jettisoned when empty or as soon as the aircraft needs to get rid of them to accelerate and maneuver against an enemy fighter plane or to evade a surface to air missile. Several thousand drop tanks were jettisoned over Southeast Asia during the Vietnam War. And here you can see what happened to some of those that were recovered. Source
