America celebrates 75 years of paratroopers (28 HQ photos and story)

The Army will honor the 75th anniversary of the American paratrooper with — what else? — a large jump into Fort Benning, Georgia. The commemoration, led by the Airborne and Ranger Training Brigade, will mark 75 years since the War Department approved the formation of a test platoon of airborne infantry from Fort Benning's 29th Infantry Regiment. Less than 45 days after it was formed, on Aug. 16, 1940, members of the test platoon made their first jump from a Douglas B-18 over Lawson Army Airfield.

Their 6,500-mile cross-country mission was to raise awareness of the high rate of suicide amongst Veterans and show their brothers and sisters-at-arms that there is hope for them. During their journey, they interviewed researchers, healthcare providers, and Veterans. Many of those they encountered had either contemplated or attempted suicide and were able to share the life-saving alternative sources of hope that they had found. Asking hard-hitting questions and opening up about their own struggles, and painfully spurred on by recent estimations that 22 veterans are taking their own lives every single day, Daniel and Doc will stop at nothing to reach tomorrow's twenty-two.

"We are two Army helicopter pilots (Joe and Shane) and when challenged to win a golf cart parade contest for the forth of July.... well, we don't play around. So, with a skinny wood frame, thrift store bed sheets, some house paint and two weeks we ended up with a tank. When parked in our drive way the 3/4 scale world war two M4 Sherman tank even caused the local military helicopters to circle and take a second look. Needless to say, we took first place."
