The United States of American has chosen its representative at the upcoming 2015 Miss Universe pageant – Miss Oklahoma Olivia Jordan who was crowned the new Miss USA 2015. A native of Tulsa, 26-year-old gorgeous Olivia Jordan topped the chart of 50 contestants at the Baton Rouge Civic Center in Louisiana to succeed last year’s Nia Sanchez of Nevada. Whether it was her beauty or her intelligent answers as she talked about race-relations in the question-answer session, Olivia won the hearts of the judges and the spectators alike. Her statement on the stage, “I think we still need to talk about race relations in this country. We have not solved this issue. We are still having problems and we keep hearing about new issues that are coming up. We really need to work on being an accepting society and being a society where every single person, no matter your race, no matter your gender, is given the same rights and privileges and opportunities,” comes in the backdrop of pageant co-owner and president candidate Donald Trump’s recent derogatory comments on Mexican immigrants where he called them “rapists” and “criminals.” Her final dress as she was crowned the pageant winner was hot pink strapless dress that sat well on her slim build matching with her lovely face. When asked about the woman should grace the $10 bill in 2020, she initially wished that Oprah Winfrey was eligible but then settled on Harriet Tubman saying, “There are some amazing women in American history. I think Harriet Tubman would be a beautiful example of where we have been, and how far we are coming and how far we still have to go. Thank you” (Harriet was a former slave helped other escaped slaves obtain freedom). With Olivia Jordan taking the Miss USA 2015 crown, the runners up were Miss Texas Ylianna Guerra (1st runner up) and Miss Rhode Island Anea Garcia, Miss Nevada Brittany McGowan and Miss Maryland Mame Adjei in that order. Jordan is a graduate of Boston University with a B.S. in Health Science and was also a group fitness instructor and a personal trainer during this time. She has also featured in several national and international commercials and feature films including Hot Tub Time Machine 2. With this win, she will hold the crown for a year. The Nintendo world will never be the same again. As the gaming communities and fans of the Wii and Nintendo gaming universe reel from the shock of his sudden passing at the age of 55, Nintendo President Satoru Iwata leaves behind a rich legacy of innovation in game code and revolutionary gaming consoles. The sudden death seemed to be the result of a bile duct growth according to a company official statement which said, “Nintendo Co., Ltd. deeply regrets to announce that President Satoru Iwata passed away on July 11, 2015 due to a bile duct growth.” With tributes pouring in from every quarter for a man who described himself ‘as having the brain of a developer and the heart of a gamer,’ it is indeed a sad day for video gamers all over the world. Many took to Twitter and social media platforms to show their sorrow, condolences and sympathy. Others chose to do it the gamers way with with fan art, swordfighter and banana meme videos and other forms of tribute honouring the beloved president. Others have chosen to honour him through doodles, character status updates etch on Wii games. Satoru Iwata was a prime example of a rising star – from a programmer in the 1980s to President in 2002 and the CEO of Nintendo America in 2013 – he was responsible for bringing gaming into every household. The Nintendo DS and Wii consoles we know so well were the first ever family games. Iwata himself was always the face that interacted with the gaming communities and even hosted column called ‘Iwata Asks’ on Nintendo’s site where game developers were interviewed about their latest innovations. It was his firm belief in gaming that kept the company going even in the face of rivals like PlayStation and Xbox. He is best known for works like Smash Bros, The Legend of Zelda, Pokemon and Kirby. His last work before leaving the world was to strike a deal with mobile gaming company DeNA which would allow the company to enter the world of mobile gaming on smart devices. With his death, the world has lost not only a dynamic leader but an ardent gamer and influencer in the world of technology and gaming. As Iwata once remarked, "Video games are meant to be just one thing," he said. "Fun! Fun for everyone." RIP Satoru Iwata, you will be greatly missed. It was an exciting finale as the contestants battled on the green turf with hard-hits and powerful blows traded on either side of the white net. As the stands erupted into roaring cheers, the ecstatic winners held up their respective hard-won trophies, savouring the sweet taste of Grand Slam victory at the Wimbledon 2015. As the curtain descends, it is time to step back and take a look at this year’s Wimbledon champions. More Recent Articles |
