Typhoon Neoguri slams in to Okinawa. Full Story: A powerful typhoon battered the Okinawa on Tuesday leading Japanese authorities to urge more than 100,000 people to evacuate their homes as the storm threatened to bring torrential rain and high winds to Japan's southern islands. Typhoon Neoguri weakened from its original status as a super typhoon but remained intense, with wind gusting at more than 155 mph. It was powering through the Okinawa island chain where emergency warnings were in effect for rain and high seas. More than 100,000 people in the tropical island chain, some 1,000 miles south-west of Tokyo, were urged to evacuate. Nearly 7,000 households lost power and an oil refinery halted operations. Neoguri was roughly 50 miles south-east of Miyako island at 0745a.m local time (2245 GMT, JULY 7) and moving north-west at 12 mph, with sustained winds of 110 mph.
