More than 200 parrots are being treated after being rescued from poachers in Paraguay.

Hundreds of parrots rescued by authorities from animal traffickers in western Paraguay last month were recovering at the Enciso National Park in Boqueron where they were being cared for by wild animal experts.

Police rescued more than 200 parrots known as blue-fronted amazons, or "Amazona aestiva," which are native to South America, and highly valued by pet collectors for their bright plumage and ability to mimic human speech.

The experts said many of the birds were young and were likely snatched from their nests to be sold on the black-market where they can fetch more than $2,000 dollars each.

Authorities arrested four people in connection with the incident. Removing birds from their natural habitat and transporting them across the border is illegal in Paraguay.
