To celebrate ELLE's 30th anniversary, we spoke to more than 30 extraordinary 30-year-olds—including actresses (Olivia Wilde, Anna Kendrick, America Ferrera), entrepreneurs (Elizabeth Holmes, Emily Weiss, Sophia Amoruso), politicians and pundits (Congresswoman Elise Stefanik, Boston city councillor Michelle Wu, Meghan McCain), activists (Gaby Pacheco), and athletes (Lindsey Vonn, Sarah Hughes, Allyson Felix). Each subject spoke about turning 30. For Wilde it meant being "too old to play dumb." For Holmes, it's about "working really, really hard."
But what does 30 look like if you're not a movie star or a congresswoman or a self-made billionaire?
Speaking as a thirtysomething myself, I finally feel like I'm starting to figure things out. I'm working hard in a job I am incredibly passionate about. People take me seriously, and sometimes that feels scary or weird. The best part of turning 30 has to be that all my peers have finally come around to my preferred method of leisure time: pj's, couch, cooking, and wine (versus drugs, bars, and late nights).
We asked more than 30 real thirtysomethings—whose lives may be more relatable but no less extraordinary—to talk to us about the age that ELLE's editor in chief, Robbie Myers, calls "the new starting line." We asked them about their fears, their dreams, what matters and what doesn't matter at all anymore (hint: what people think about you). Their answers were poignant and compelling, and we're guessing you'll agree with a lot of what they have to say. |
