Skype’s Real-Time Voice Translator is a Dream Come True

Have you tried out the new Skype Translator? If not, then you are really missing out! Microsoft-owned Skype has rolled out a free preview of its Star Trek-style real-time voice translator app to all users around the world.

Screenshot-2014-05-28-06.24.52

Initially launched in December 2014, the invite-only app required users to sign up for a waiting list to be able to test out its real-time voice translation in Spanish, English, Italian and Mandarin. The current free-for-use preview offers instant messaging translation in 50 languages with more being developed each day.

Try it out with your friends in different parts of the globe and relish the experience of talking in your native tongue while knowing that the user on the other end can hear your words in their language. In other words, the Skype Translator can instantly translate instant messages or video chats in real time.

Once the translation option in Skype is turned on, users can connect with and chat with any contact in their address book (drop-down menu). After the languages have been selected, the app provides an on-screen rendition of what that contact is saying which appears in a sidebar chat window. This way no word, phrase or emotion is lost in translation! If you think the app has made a mistake, you can either correct it or type in the correction in the chat feed.

Talking about their latest innovation, an official statement from the company said, “We are breaking down language barriers that have historically made it challenging for friends and families to connect. Skype's mission is to bring people together from all over the world, and with Skype Translator we are breaking down language barriers that have historically made it challenging for friends and families to connect. Our goal for Skype Translator is to translate as many languages as possible on relevant platforms, and to deliver the best speech translation experience to our more than 300 million connected Skype customers.”

The best example of the app’s use comes from a New-York based non-profit organization called Pro Mujer which took part in the initial testing to provide women in Latin America micro-loans for starting small businesses, offered them healthcare services and job training all through the app. Skype Translator was used as the primary medium of communication between the local Latin America and U.S.-based teams to overcome the language barrier while maintaining time efficiency.

During the initial days of testing, the app threw up errors in slang and local jargon translation. The new beta version however takes care of most of those issues. Since the app is still under development, the only access to the service is via the Skype Translator preview app on Windows 8.1 and 10 devices; users can download it free from the Windows Store.

After G4 LG unveils G4 Stylo and G4c with Android 5.0 Lollipop

If the LG G4 is slightly out of your range but you still want to get your hands on the latest LG, then check out the latest additions to the G4 family – the G Stylo and G4c.

The 5.7-inch LG G Stylo and the 5-inch LG G4c have both been launched by the company as budget-friendly, mid-range alternatives to the pricey LG G4 but with the latest Android 5.0 Lollipop OS overlaid with LG’s new UX 4.0 skin.

The LG G4 Stylo is also known as the G4 Stylus outside of North America and South Korea and it comes in LTE and 3G versions where the LTE variant is powered by a 1.2 GHz quadcore processor and the 3G version runs a 1.4 GHz octacore processor under the hood. The company announced that the LTE version of the LG Stylus, called ‘G4 Stylo’ in the South Korean and North American market will debut with a Qualcomm Snapdragon 410 processor.

There is also a change in terms of the camera; unlike the gorgeous 16MP OIS camera of the G4, the LTE G Stylo comes with a 13MP primary camera while the 3G version downgrades it to 8MP, the same as that of the G4c. However the good news is the LTE G Stylo still has the laser-assisted focus system that is integrated in the high-end LG G4. Both models however have similar 5 MP front-facing cameras and other features like Gesture Shot, Glance View and Knock Code.

Apple Updates 15-inch MacBook Pro with 'Force Touch' and Slashes Price of Retina 5K iMac

Apple fans have new reason to rejoice ahead of Apple's worldwide developers conference (WWDC), the Cupertino-based electronics giant has announced that it is updating its 15-inchMacBook Pro line of premium notebooks with “Force Touch” trackpad and as an added bonus, slashing the price of its top-end iMac with Retina 5K.

The revolutionary “Force Touch” trackpad with haptic feedback was initially showcased on the new MacBook laptops and is also found in the 13-inch Retina MacBook Pro as well as the Apple Watch unveiled earlier this year. The uniqueness of the trackpad lies in the fact that it can detect the amount of pressure on the surface and translate it into various actions. For example, a slight tap/touch on a word (on a website) might pull up a definition for that word while a deep pressure on an address could open a map. The same technology is expected to debut on the upcoming iPhones to be announced later this year.

Another update relates to the pricey $2499 MacBook Pro which is all set to get “discrete” graphics which will increase its speed about 80 per cent and comprise video editing programs like Final Cut Pro X and 3D image rendering. The flash storage on the entire line has been made 2 1/2 times faster than the previous models.

BN-IM445_Mac_02_G_20150519093333Philip Schiller, Apple’s senior vice president of worldwide marketing, issued a statement saying, “The response to the new MacBook and updated 13-inch MacBook Pro with Retina display has been amazing, and today we are thrilled to bring the new Force Touch trackpad, faster flash storage and longer battery life to the 15-inch MacBook Pro with Retina display.”

The 15-inch MacBook Pro has been priced at a starting range of $1,999 and comprises:

  • “Force Touch” trackpad
  • 2.2 GHz quad-core Intel Core i7
  • 16GB RAM
  • 256GB SSD
  • Increased Battery Life
  • Faster Flash Storage

Along with the “Force Touch” and increased battery life, the $2499 MacBook Pro includes

  • 2.5 GHz chipset
  • 512GB SSD
  • Faster “discrete” graphics via AMD Radeon R9 M370X with 2GB GDDR5 memory

In another slew of announcements, Apple said that it will be adding a higher resolution and faster processor to its 27-inch Retina 5K (5120×2880) display iMac lineup while slashing the price to $1,999 (entry level); the price of the top-end Retina 5K iMac has also been brought down to $2,299 from the earlier retail price of $2,499.

  • 1 TB hard drive
  • 8GB RAM
  • AMD Radeon R9 M920 with 2GB video memory
  • 4 USB 3.0 ports and 2 Thunderbolt 2 ports
