The death toll in northern Chile after last week's devastating floods is set to rise, although relatives and friends of the missing hold out hope that their loved ones are still alive. Full Story: They're searching for bodies in Chanarel. More than 15 people are known to have died here in last week's floods...but at least 20 others are unaccounted for. Rescue and recovery workers say they are unlikely to find any survivors at this stage. This small, coastal city in northern Chile was battered by heavy rains that turned streets into rivers of mud, displacing more than 4,000 people. There were deaths in nearby Copiapo too...the severity of the flooding exacerbated by eight years of drought that has left hillsides without sufficient vegetation to absorb or hold back the floodwaters.
