| A resolution that would have recognized the state of Palestine and called for an end to Israeli occupation was narrowly defeated in the UN Security Council on Tuesday night, falling just one vote short of passage. Eight countries voted to approve the measure, one short of needing a veto, which the US promised to use if needed to defeat the resolution.
