Where was this beauty when I was in the Air Force (26 Photos)

Posted: 17 Dec 2014 08:10 PM PST

Quite the resume so far Charissa. A girl that was an All-State basketball player in Florida, went on to pursue a modeling career, did five years in the Air Force, separated and is working on her Master's while continuing to model. She enjoys salt-water fishing, camping, extreme sports such as skydiving and snowboarding while going to the gun range as well. Overall Charissa is one BA chica. Find out more info about her at charissalittlejohn.com or follow her on Instagram (@charissa_littlejohn), Twitter (@Charissa_35) or Facebook

Germany and Spain working together on the Barracuda UAV (15 HQ Photos)

Posted: 17 Dec 2014 08:08 PM PST

The EADS Barracuda is a jet powered European unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) currently under development by EADS, intended for the role of reconnaissance and also combat (UCAV). The aircraft is a joint venture between Germany and Spain. Development of the project was stopped after the first prototype crashed at sea while approaching for landing during a test flight. The program was resumed in 2008, with a second prototype being completed in November 2008. The rebuilt Barracuda underwent a series of successful flight tests in Goose Bay, Canada during July 2009, followed by further flight campaigns in 2010 and 2012.

PJ’s extraordinary heroism earns Air Force Cross (7 Photos)

Posted: 17 Dec 2014 08:06 PM PST

My last rotation in Afghanistan I was replaced with a couple of Combat Controllers as well as this PJ (Ivan Ruiz). Usually it takes a guy a couple of weeks to get their footing when deployed. Not Ivan. He hit the ground running and those actions proved worthwhile as he engaged the enemy face-to-face and then administered life-saving techniques, under NVG's, to his teammates. It was an honor brother. First There...That Others May Live Recognizing extraordinary heroism shown in combat, Secretary of the Air Force Deborah Lee James presented the Air Force Cross to an Air Commando during a ceremony here, Dec. 17. Master Sgt. Ivan Ruiz, a pararescueman deployed with the 22nd Expeditionary Special Tactics Squadron, was awarded the U.S. military's second highest decoration, only to the Medal of Honor, for an Airman. He earned the medal for protecting and saving the lives of two wounded teammates while under heavy enemy fire at close range during combat operations in Kandahar Province, Afghanistan, Dec. 10, 2013.

A mechanical shark for the Navy? Affix lasers…(3 Photos)

Posted: 17 Dec 2014 08:04 PM PST

The U.S. Navy completed tests on the GhostSwimmer unmanned underwater vehicle (UUV) at Joint Expeditionary Base Little Creek-Fort Story (JEBLC-FS), Dec. 11. GhostSwimmer is the latest in a series of science-fiction-turned-reality projects developed by the chief of naval operations' Rapid Innovation Cell (CRIC) project, Silent NEMO. Silent NEMO is an experiment that explores the possible uses for biomimetic, unmanned underwater vehicles in the fleet. Over the past several weeks, Boston Engineering's tuna-sized device has been gathering data at JEBLC-FS on tides, varied currents, wakes, and weather conditions for the development of future tasks. "GhostSwimmer will allow the Navy to have success during more types of missions while keeping divers and Sailors safe," said Michael Rufo, director of Boston Engineering's Advanced Systems Group. The GhostSwimmer was developed to resemble the shape and mimic the swimming style of a large fish. At a length of approximately 5 feet and a weight of nearly 100 pounds, the GhostSwimmer vehicle can operate in water depths ranging from 10 inches to 300 feet. "It swims just like a fish does by oscillating its tail fin back and forth," said Rufo. "The unit is a combination of unmanned systems engineering and unique propulsion and control capabilities." Its bio-mimicry provides additional security during low visibility intelligence, surveillance and reconnaissance (ISR) missions and friendly hull inspections, while quieter than propeller driven craft of the same size, according to Navy Warfare Development Command (NWDC). The robot is capable of operating autonomously for extended periods of time due to its long-lasting battery, but it can also be controlled via laptop with a 500-foot tether. The tether is long enough to transmit information while inspecting a ship's hull, for example, but if operating independently (without a tether) the robot will have to periodically be brought to the surface to download its data.
