Dear ,
In April the community of Bulga in the Hunter Valley won their court case against mining giant Rio Tinto’s open-cut coal mine, a victory that saved their village and the endangered Warkworth Sands Woodland.
But the fight is not over.
Rio Tinto and the NSW government have since taken the community back to court to overturn the ruling.
Now in complete disregard of community rights, the O’Farrell government is working to fast-track the approval of a new application by Rio Tinto to expand the controversial Warkworth coal mine—while the court case is still pending.
The NSW planning system is broken. Together we can demand our politicians fix it.
It took 21 days in total from the time Rio submitted its application, until the Planning Department's recommendation to approve the mine expansion. That is compared to an average of 68 days for a home renovation to be approved.
Battles to protect our land and water against international mining companies are happening all over the state.
Check out our new short film that highlights six iconic natural areas threatened by coal mines and gasfields, and the people fighting to protect them.
If our politicians won’t protect our communities and environment– then we will. But we need your help.
The Nature Conservation Council of NSW is joining forces with the Lock the Gate Alliance to launch the Our Land, Our Water, Our Future campaign to hold the O’Farrell government to account before the state election in 2015.
Stand with communities across the state and take action today by emailing your local MP and the Premier. Let them know that you will stand up to protect NSW from the damaging impacts of coal and gas and call on them to do the same.
Together we have the strength to overcome the undue influence of the mining industry and to win genuine reforms that protect our communities and the places we love.
Hope you will join us today!
