| Figure skating is the oldest sport on the Olympic Winter Games programme. It was first contested at the 1908 London Games and again in 1920 in Antwerp, despite those being currently recognized as Olympic Summer Games.
From the first separate Winter Olympics, in Chamonix 1924, ice skating was present with three events: men's, women's, and pairs. Ice dancing first joined the programme at the Innsbruck 1976 Games.
The Soviet Union dominated the first Olympic ice dancing event with Lyudmila Pakhomova and Aleksandr Gorshkov winning the gold medal, while Irina Moiseyeva and Andrei Minenkov finished in second place, taking silver. Colleen O'Connor and James Millns from the USA completed the podium in third place.
