A Russian court resumed on Wednedsay the trial of Sergei Magnitsky, a lawyer for the British firm Hermitage Capital, who died in jail in 2009.
Magnitsky exposed alleged financial fraud by Russian authorities, and was then arrested for tax evasion and fraud - similar to the crimes he uncovered.
Prosecutors and Russian tax authorities took their seats in the courtroom, whilst the cage usually reserved for defendants sat empty, as the defendant is dead.
This is the first known case of a trial against a dead person in Russia.
Magnitsky died less than a year after his arrest, with family and his former employer saying he was mistreated in prison.
Last year, the United States passed legislation intended to bar visas for Russians accused of involvement in Magnitsky's case, and to freeze the assets they hold in the United States.
