| The massacre of over a dozen French citizens by terrorists has thrust the issue of radicalization into the spotlight once again, with many taking a look at the case of American citizen Anwar Al-Awlaki in the hopes of finding a root cause. Before killing him with a drone strike in Yemen, the Pentagon was holding up the imam from northern Viriginia as the prime example of a moderate Muslim who denounces extremism. Over the course of several years, however, many believe he became disillusioned with US foreign policy, which led to his becoming an Al Qaeda leader. Could Awlaki's case be a lesson on how moderates become extremists? Saif Inam, policy analyst at the Muslim Public Affairs Council, and Justin Gest, professor at George Mason University, discuss.
